“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.
It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better.
TAKE ACTION. INSPIRE CHANGE.
MAKE EVERY DAY A MANDELA DAY
The message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better.
If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build a country of our dreams.
The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference.
In commemoration of Mandela Day, the All Fuels team spent the afternoon with children at Baitul Aman Orphanage. We empowered them with a basic self defense demo, which was thoroughly enjoyed. Shared a meal with them and parted with a gift. Each child was give a lunch Cooler bag full of sweet treats, the happiness that something so simple brought to these children’s face is indescribable.
Baitul Aman Children’s Home is based in La Mercy, North of Durban. The Home has a child and youth care programme to meet the changing demands. The scourge of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, the number abandoned babies and neglected children from diverse backgrounds demanded that Baitul Aman refocuses its conventional child and youth care programme to meet this need. The home houses 41 children, and takes care of their daily requirements.
There is also an abandoned babies unit at Baitul Aman. Babies ranging from birth to 3 years are cared for in this unit.
67 minutes of pure joy…
Giving isn’t just about money, so you don’t need to be rich. Giving to others can be as simple as a single kind word, smile or a thoughtful gesture. It can include giving time, care, skills, thought or attention. Sometimes these mean as much, if not more, than financial gifts.
